The best hotel in Nepal and one of the nicest places in the world. A unique, historical, spiritual setting with a magic view over Durbar Square, completely traffic free and in the mornings and evenings also tourist free. I have come back here several times since 1992 (and travelled all over the world including most areas in Nepal). Since 2016 or 2017, the rooms are very well renovated with tiled own bathrooms, hot water and good pressure in the showers, bedlamps, good lightning in general, excellent wifi and practical nicely designed storages in the rooms. The view and setting by Durbar Square is something you can not get tired of watching as well as the locals going to the closest temple (Shiva's) getting their tica and do their hindu morning rituals early in the morning. If you go to Nepal, you will probably pass the Kathmandu valley. My advice is not to stay in Kathmandu. It is nowadays terribly poluted from traffic, both regarding noise, pollution, and traffic jams. Stay at Shiva Guest House in Bhaktapur instead. You reach Kathmandu if you have/want to in half an hour but the air and atmosphere is like from another world. We have only received good food and good service both regarding the room and the restaurant at Shiva GH. Their famous Curd with fruit and their Masala Pakod is highly recommended in particular and their lemon/ginger hot drink is better than elsewhere for some unknown reason. Regarding comments on dogs in the area, we heard them in the evening around 9 pm for maximum 10 minutes barking. If you want it to be exactly like home, please stay at home.
